Interior Design Tips for Stylish Seniors

Whether it’s sprucing up your room in an assisted living facility or keeping up with the latest trends in your own home, aging doesn’t mean you can’t be stylish with your interior design choices. On the contrary,  your advanced years can give you a keen eye for detail and a sense of what works best for you – so why not use that to your advantage?

Here are some tips to get you started.

Utilize Color

Color does so much in this regard. Not only does it add vibrancy to a room, but it can also make a huge difference in an atmosphere.

Choose colors that you are naturally drawn to regardless and ones that create energy. This will make any space look inviting and warm. If you’ve always liked orange, try pairing it with a vibrant blue to create a unique contrast. Or if you’re more traditional, choose a softer palette like light blues for a classic look. For example, an orange couch with blue and pink accents like throw pillows or curtains can easily transform the look of any room.

Incorporate Texture

Texture adds depth to your interior design choices. Layer carpets with different patterns and textures for an extra layer of dimension that will bring everything together.  For example, add a vintage area rug to the center of the room and use a modern-style carpet on the sides. The two textures together will provide a great visual contrast that can make any room instantly feel more inviting and stylish.

Or for something more modern, try incorporating metallics such as copper or chrome into your accessories like lamps and furniture. For example, a metal wall lamp and chrome side tables.

Using different textures in a space can really bring it to life and make it look vibrant while also adding a bit of warmth.

Utilize Your Space

When decorating, always consider the size of the room and furniture placement. If you’re working with a smaller space, choose pieces that won’t overwhelm the room and make it look cluttered. For example, when choosing furniture, opt for pieces that are low to the ground or ones that have legs. This will create an illusion of spaciousness.

If you’re working with a larger space, consider dividing it up to create different areas that you can use for different activities. Use furniture pieces to define the spaces and if possible, add indoor plants or rugs to separate them further.

Accessorize

Accessories are a great way to add some personality and vibrancy to any room. Add a few vintage bookshelves or decorative trays with items like art pieces that will bring your interior design choices to life. Choose pieces that have sentimental value or personal meaning and display them in interesting ways that you can actually enjoy looking at.

You can also add statement pieces, like large statues and paintings, to the room for a dramatic effect. A large canvas painting on one of your walls will instantly add a unique touch to the space.

By following these tips and trusting your own wisdom for design, you can create a stylish, inviting atmosphere that’s perfect for any senior. Have fun with it and get creative – there’s no wrong way to express your interior design style!
