Doing laundry is a chore that no one likes to do, but it has to be done. Unfortunately, not everyone has the benefit of using a washer and dryer in their own homes, which leads them to using self serve laundromats. However, this does not have to be a tiring or boring experience you dread every week. Instead, with a little bit of planning and preparation, you can make the most of your time at a laundromat. Here are some helpful tips on how you can use your time at a laundromat effectively.
Plan Ahead
Before heading to the laundromat, make sure that you have everything you need to complete the task efficiently. The first thing you want to do is separate your clothes, towels, and linens in the correct piles so that you can start loading up the machines as soon as you arrive. It’s also a good idea to pre-treat any stains on your clothes before reaching the laundromat to save time. You should also take note of busy periods to avoid so that when you visit, there are empty machines available. This is a massively overlooked point that will save you time and frustration.
Get Productive
Rather than waiting around the laundromat for hours, why not use that time productively? Bring with you a book or tablet to catch up on some reading, or bring your laptop so you could work on your to-do list. You can also use this time to catch up on emails, reply to messages or browse your social media feed. You could even consider taking up a new hobby, and bring with you something creative that you enjoy doing.
Multi-task
There are some tasks that can be done simultaneously whilst waiting for your laundry to finish. For instance, you can do some grocery shopping while you’re waiting for your clothes to dry, or run errands. This way you’ll not only be saving time but will have a more productive day. Alternatively, you can take your exercise mat with you, and you’ll be able to perform a few stretches or yoga poses whilst waiting for your clothes (ideally at a nearby park).
Make Friends
Laundromats are great places to meet new people and make new friends. If you see someone at the laundromat regularly, try to strike a conversation, they could become your new exercise buddy, or someone who has the same taste in books as you. Being in this kind of environment also exposes you to different cultures you may not have encountered before, so take an open-minded approach and learn about the things that make them different and unique.
With a little bit of planning, preparation, creativity, and sociability, the time you spend at the laundromat could become as regular and enjoyable as any other activity in your life. So next time you’re doing laundry, try out some of these tips, and you’ll be surprised at how much you can accomplish while waiting for your clothes to finish washing and drying. And lets face it, there is no avoiding it, so better to make the most of it.
